Trailer Boxes, 2008 – ongoing

Wood, paint, archival inkjet prints.

The Trailer Boxes were made in parallel with my other work with mobile homes, beginning with the FEMA trailers inĀ Four Folding Chairs, 2006, through some of the Home Front pieces of 2009, to the installation of an actual, formerly occupied mobile home under the High Line in New York in The Other End of the Line, 2010. Those works in different ways used mobile homes as vehicles for critique. The Trailer Boxes, by contrast, celebrate individual expression manifested in the personalization of manufactured homes by their occupants. The design of each box reflects that of the home in the photograph.

Most boxes are about 10 1/2 inches long and 3 inches or less in the other two dimensions. They recollect pencil boxes. They open, and some are divided internally. Two or three are some 15 inches or so long. I have made about forty to date.
