I am fortunate: my life is pleasant, calm. I am safe, warm, dry and do not go hungry.
Around is a world of war and famine.
Here too we are now threatened by violence.
Neighbors talk of where they could flee if the time comes.
Our world not being whole, I cannot be whole.
Though not personally torn apart by strife, I am nevertheless not whole.
The metaphor is of hurricanes. I have not been hit by a hurricane, but they swirl around.
The chairs take their names from hurricanes.
Each chair is about 34 x 16 x 16 ins.
All are built in pine and painted.
The starting point of each is a chair I live with. The initial drawings are made using the clone tool in photoshop.
Because I would want to show the drawings in a separate space from the chairs themselves, I have put the “photo drawings” up on Instagram @franciscape1.
